NBE100 Example – Basic System

Maretron’s Network Bus Extender (NBE100) is often used to extend an NMEA 2000 network beyond the specified limits. For example, NMEA 2000 specifies no more than 50 products connected to a single network, which can be extended to 100 products using the NBE100. There are other reasons to use an NBE100 and one of those reasons is to isolate two or more networks from each other so that if one of the networks become compromised, it won’t affect the other networks. This particular example system shows two networks interconnected with the NBE100. Notice that both networks have a powertap and termination resistors such that the networks can work independently. However, the data from each network is bridged across to the other network through the NBE100. The signals are optically coupled through the NBE100 to each network making all the sensor data available to both displays. If one of the networks becomes compromised, the other network continues to operate correctly. This allows one to incorporate some fail safe mechanisms into the system such that one failure point doesn’t bring down the entire network.
