I see that Maretron’s DSM150, DSM200, and DSM250 displays have a SSC200 configuration setting called "Rate of Turn Damping Period:"; what is this?

Estimated Reading Time: 1 Minutes

Maretron’s DSM150, DSM200, and DSM250 displays have a SSC200 configuration setting called "Rate of Turn Damping Period:", which is used to smooth the rate of turn indication. The rate of turn indication uses the rate of turn gyro found within the SSC200 which is an extremely sensitive device and can provide very rapidly changing readings, especially in a pitching and rolling seaway. You can filter or dampen some of these rapidly changing values by using this configuration setting. You should be aware that damping or filtering does introduce a latency or delay in time since several past readings are being averaged to display the current value. Increasing the damping period smoothes the reading but also increases the latency.
